MY SUMMER IN 3 WORDS
Ask students to think of three English words describing their summer.
Examples:
beach – friends – relaxing
family – travel – hot
work – football – fun
Students then share their three words with a partner.
After 2–3 minutes, ask a few students:
- Why did you choose these words?
- What was the best thing about your summer?
Tip: Don't correct every mistake. The aim is to get everyone speaking English again.
2. “Find Someone Who…” — 10 minutes
Give students a list of things to find among their classmates.
For example:
- Find someone who went swimming this summer.
- Find someone who visited another country.
- Find someone who watched a lot of films.
- Find someone who read a book.
- Find someone who tried a new food.
- Find someone who stayed up very late.
- Find someone who played a sport.
- Find someone who had a really funny experience.
Students walk around asking:
“Did you go swimming this summer?”
“Yes, I did.” / “No, I didn't.”
When they find someone, they write that person's name.
Challenge for stronger students: They must ask one additional question.
“Where did you go swimming?”
“Who did you go with?”
3. Summer Story – “Two Truths and a Lie” — 10 minutes
Students write three sentences about their summer:
- One true sentence.
- Another true sentence.
- One false sentence.
Example:
I visited Croatia.
I ate pizza three times in one day.
I went skydiving.
Their classmates guess which statement is the lie.
This works particularly well with students who already know one another because they can use what they know about their friends to challenge them.
Useful language on the board:
I think number ___ is the lie because…
Really? When did you do that?
Who did you go with?
I don't believe you!
4. Moving Debate – “This or That?” — 10 minutes
Choose two sides of the classroom.
Tell students:
Left = YES / OPTION A
Right = NO / OPTION B
Read out statements and students move to the side representing their opinion.
Examples:
- Summer is the best season.
- School should start later in the morning.
- Homework is sometimes useful.
- It's better to travel with friends than with family.
- Phones should be allowed in English lessons.
English is easier than maths.
Optional final activity: “One Question for the Teacher”
- Give students 2 minutes to think of one question they would like to ask the English teacher.
- It can be serious or funny:
- What's your favourite English word?
- Have you ever lived abroad?
- What's the strangest English word you know?
- What's your favourite English-speaking country?
- What's the best film you've seen?
- Do you like homework?
- Students ask the questions in English.
New School Year Goals – 5 minutes
Give each student a small piece of paper.
Ask them to complete:
This year I want to improve my English by…
and
One thing I want to be able to do in English is…
Examples:
“I want to speak more confidently.”
“I want to understand films in English.”
“I want to learn more vocabulary.”
“I want to get a better grade.”
Collect the papers. You can keep them and return them near the end of the school year so students can see their progress.
